Injury Prevention
Injury prevention is an essential part of any training programme, as even a minor injury can delay progress for weeks. Following a few key strategies before, during, and after exercise can help reduce the risk of injury and improve overall performance.
A proper warm-up is the first step in injury prevention. Before every workout, spend 5–10 minutes performing light cardiovascular exercise to increase your heart rate, followed by 5 minutes of dynamic stretching. Raising your heart rate increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles, improving their elasticity and preparing them for exercise. Dynamic stretches also activate the nervous system and make muscles, tendons, and ligaments more flexible, reducing the risk of strains and tears.
A balanced training programme should include cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility work. Cardiovascular exercise improves endurance and delays fatigue, helping to maintain good technique throughout exercise. Strength training increases bone density and strengthens muscles, tendons, and ligaments, improving joint stability and correcting muscle imbalances that can lead to injury. Exercises should always be performed with good technique and through a full range of motion. Flexibility training improves joint mobility and muscle elasticity, allowing movements to be performed safely while reducing biomechanical stress. Stretches should be performed slowly, held for around 20 seconds, and never cause pain.
Hydration is also vital for injury prevention. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps, slower reaction times, and reduced joint lubrication, increasing the likelihood of injury. Drink 500–600 ml of water 2–3 hours before exercise, 200–300 ml around 15 minutes before training and continue drinking 200–300 ml every 10–20 minutes during exercise. For workouts lasting longer than an hour, electrolyte drinks can help replace minerals lost through sweat.
Cooling down is just as important as warming up. A 5-10-minute cool-down consisting of light cardiovascular exercise followed by static stretching gradually lowers the heart rate, improves circulation, reduces muscle stiffness, and helps prevent dizziness after exercise.
By consistently warming up, training appropriately, staying hydrated, and cooling down effectively, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of injury and maintain long-term progress in their fitness journey.
