Exercise for wellbeing
Does exercise feel like a chore to you? Do you sometimes workout to punish your body for being lazy or for having overindulged? Perhaps you just do not enjoy exercise very much, because of bad experiences in the past. Being active is vitally important for maintaining both physical and mental health as scientific research consistently demonstrates, so finding ways to enjoy exercise and to bring mind and body together when we workout is significant for the health and wellbeing of almost all of us.
Exercise for Wellbeing is an approach to exercise which embraces a balanced approach to exercise and takes account of the needs of the individual. Exercise for Wellbeing does not simply focus on getting an individual to be fitter, faster and stronger regardless of the strain their body might be experiencing. Instead, it looks at aspects of training such as joint alignment to facilitate fluid patterns of motion optimised for comfort. Equally Exercise for Wellbeing might take into consideration how weight is distributed through the lower body when a client is walking, running or working out on the cross trainer. This might lead to specific exercises for strengthening the muscles of the back and core to take strain off the lower back, or the gluteal muscles might be targeted to reduce stress on the knees.
Frequently overlooked aspects of fitness, including mobility, reaction time skills, balance and agility, are actively taken into account with Exercise for Wellbeing. Activities which develop these elements of fitness not only boost overall fitness by aiding the body to move more freely, but introduce new and unfamiliar types of exercise which may come as a fun and refreshing experience to the formerly reluctant exerciser.
